Morizur, Yvon; Gaudou, Olivier; Demaneche, Sebastien.
During the years 2008 to 2013 several observations of catches were planned on board of set netters fishing in the bay of Biscay, in the English Channel, in the North sea and in the Mediterranean area (around Corsica). All the observations were done on nets without pingers and they were pooled to provide an average bycatch rate of marine mammals by fleet. Estimates of annual bycatch by using the fishing efforts of the year 2012 were provided by fleet. Harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena was the most common bycatch in set nets. An average annual estimate of 600 harbour porpoises was obtained for the French fleet; other species recorded in set nets were mainly common dolphin Delphinus delphis, striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba and the two species of seals...

Latrouite, Daniel; Morizur, Yvon.
French potters from « Manche ouest » harbours ish edible crab Cancer pagurus in English Channel, Iroise Sea and along north Biscay Bay shelf. Monthly landings of the offshore fleet analysed from logbooks for the period 1985-1987 indicate changes in fishing areas. The mean length of males, the mean length of females and the sex-ratio have been analysed by Principal Component Analysis in 1981-1987 samples. The heterogeneity between catches from different statistical rectangle (30 x 40 nautical miles) was great enough to deduce a way of raising composition from samples to total landings. It also offers the possibility to verifiy and correct declaration on geographical origin of landings.

Assessment of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.) stock delimitation in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel based on mark-recapture and genetic data ArchiMer
Fritsch, Manon; Morizur, Yvon; Lambert, E; Bonhomme, Francois; Guinand, B.
Sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fisheries are becoming increasingly abundant along eastern Atlantic coastlines, especially in the ICES sub-areas IV, VII and VIII, but they are still not being managed by the European Union TAC (Total Allowed Catches) system. Scientific information about these sea bass stocks is limited, but the fishery is currently managed or modelled based upon these data, separated into the ICES divisions. Clearly, failure to manage satisfactorily the fishery may lead to a decline in stocks. We therefore investigated the structure of Atlantic sea bass populations at eight microsatellite loci in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel and, additionally, at five selected loci in Ireland and Scotland. Genetic data showed no significant...

Bar codes in fisheries research: development of the "ichthyometer" ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Ogor, Andre; Lespagnol, Patrick.
A patent was registered in 1991 for using bar codes to make up fish measuring board. Collection of data such as the length of the captured fish and sometimes their ages are required in order to manage fishery resources. It is a time-consuming operation as this work is usually carried out throughout the year for each species. The computerization of this phase has been the subject of much research work. Electronic fish measuring boards have been developed in Scotland, Canada, and Spain but they have not spread for a number of reasons. Going beyond these developments, IFREMER designed a more efficient and new open-ended fish measuring system - the ichthyometer - which features higher flexibility by using the bar code principle

Biological sampling of non-quota species. ArchiMer
Dunn, M. R.; Rogers, S. I.; Morizur, Yvon; Tetard, Alain; Aublet, B; Le Niliot, Ph; Miossec, Dominique.
The objective of this study was to develop an effective biological sampling programme for fish species in the English Channel (ICES Divisions Vild and Vile) which are not subject to quota management, and to prepare these data for use in multispecies, multi-fleet models being developed by the Channel Fisheries Study Group. Length and age data were coIlected for six non-quota species, and length data for a further five species. The samples were coIlected over a period of two years from important ports on the French and UK coasts. The exploitation patterns of each species were described by allocating catches from similar catching gears, regions, seasons and target species into common units referred to as métiers. The most important métiers in terms of landed...

By-catch and Discarding in Pelagic Trawl Fisheries ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Tregenza, N; Heessen, H; Beerow, S; Pouvreau, Stephane.
Incidental mammal catch and the composition of the fish catch were studied in pelagic trawl fisheries in the North-East Atlantic. Several seasonal European fisheries were investigated with scientific observation on the fishing vessels. A total of 379 days at sea were observed . The sampled fisheries were horsemackerel (Dutch, French), herring (Irish), mackerel (UK), pilchard (UK , French) and other French fisheries (hake, tuna, bass, black bream, anchovy). Unintentional catches of dolphins were recorded in four of the investigated fisheries (Dutch horsemackerel, French tuna, French hake and French sea bass) at a rate of 1 dolphin per 100 tow hours; Grey seals were caught in the Irish herring fishery at a rate of 4 individuals per 100 tow hours. The fish...

Morizur, Yvon; Gaudou, Olivier; Miossec, Dominique; Leblond, Emilie; Toulhoat, Lucile; Gamblin, Caroline.
Up to now there has been no strong investigation on bycatch of marine mammals in the French set net fisheries of the English Channel (ICES areas VIIe,d &IVc) as the EC 812/2004 regulation does not oblige the state members to put observers on board of vessels in the ICES area VII. A study named FilManCet has been started end 2008-beginning 2009 to focus on the bycatch occurring on the set net vessels issued from Boulogne and Dunkerque ports (fisheries in VIId&IVc) and from the ports of North of Brittany. In this study which is conducted by the Fishing Industry, the data are made available to the scientists of Ifremer who has prepared also the sampling scheme for observation at sea. Two observers are employed full time in the North of France coasts...

This work is the result of collaboration between the English, French, Channel Isles and Belgian laboratories which are involved in a study of the English Channel. Its subject is the activities of fleets and fleet interactions, and it complements other work on the biogeographical identification of Channel fish and shellfish stocks (published), and on modelling the fleets' interactions as they exploit the resources (in preparation). The concept of a métier is defined as being the use of one fishing gear to catch one or several species targeted during a particular season in a given area. On this basis, 74 métiers were identified during 1989-90. For each métier we give a brief description of the catching gear, the target species and most usual by-catch, the...

Length measurements on Pseudotolithus elongatus ' samples from the Congo were recorded in the 60s. Subsamples were collected in order to be "aged" by otoliths' reading. The size frequency distributions were splitted into successive unimodal distributions by different methods. Their results were compared. The results obtained from the "successive maximums' method" were similar to those from the "otoliths' reading." The programs NORMSEP and MIX gave results far more difficult to interpret biologically speaking in spite of their mathematical quality. Because many length frequency distributions of a cohort are symmetrical in nature, we suggest applying the "successive maximums' method"if there is no evidence of normality

Morizur, Yvon; Charuau, Anatole.
Some trawlers from Lorient (France) are fishing for Nephrops at the North of 48th parallel. During the last years, the mesh size of their cod-end changed twice. It increased from 45 mm to 60 mm at the end of year 1978 and to 70 mm at the end of year 1979.'. Whereas the change to 60 mm seems to have no immediate- effect on Nephrops landings, the increase from 60 mm to 70 mm results in a loss in Nephrops landings of 30-40 %. That loss in Nephrops landings goes with an increase in some by-catches species as whiting, cod and hake.

Morizur, Yvon; Carn, Nolwenn.

Morizur, Yvon; Antoine, Loic.
The exploitation of the living marine resources should take into account the effects on marine ecosystems. It consequently includes direct and indirect impacts of fishing activities on marine communities of non-market value for the fishing industry. Protecting the marine species victims of by-catch such as sea mammals is essential as it could be a serious threat for endangered species -See COM (1999) 363 final. The entire group of cetaceans are among the protected species listed by CITES against over-exploitation through international trade. Similarly, several international agreements on cetaceans conservation have been signed, including the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS), the ACCOBAMS agreement for...
